Mercury Sable: Transmission Went Out; Help?

So my beautiful little Mercury Sable just so happened to have a little transmission mishap... and by "little" I mean "completely went out"; I can try to shift all I want, but the transmission just won't respond, and I can't get it to move whatsoever. I understand this description isn't extremely specific, but would anyone happen to know what specifically happened to my transmission?
