How did Ethiopia and Liberia manage to stay free in Africa and SE Asia during the European colonization?

Ethiopia stayed uncolonizied because of its moutians that protect the country. It also had strong able leaders. But it was soon colonized by italy in WW2. Liberia was a american colony set up for freed slaves
